Fractured Mending
ModrinthThis data pack overhauls the Mending enchantment into a 5-tier system to balance late-game progression.
Vanilla Mending is far too cheap and makes tool maintenance trivial. This pack turns gear immortality into something players actually have to earn.
Earlier tiers can barely extend the life expectancy of tools, while end-game tiers are the regular near-unbreakable tools you find in vanilla.
Tiered Progression
Mending now ranges from Level 1 to Level 5. The repair effectiveness scales aggressively with the enchantment level:
Level 1: 0.25 durability per XP (A brutal grind—four experience points heal a single point of durability).
Level 2: 0.5 durability per XP.
Level 3: 1.0 durability per XP.
Level 4: 1.5 durability per XP.
Level 5: 2.0 durability per XP (Restores standard vanilla behaviour).
Librarian villagers and loot chests will randomly generate these tiers just like any other standard enchantment. Players will have to spend serious time cycling trades or exploring to secure that elusive Level 5 book.
Anvil Economy
The base anvil_cost multiplier has been adjusted to 4. This ensures early-tier books remain cheap to apply, but slapping a Level 5 Mending book onto endgame gear carries a hefty experience premium.
Installation
Drop the folder or .zip directly into your server's world datapacks folder and run /reload. No client-side downloads are required.
Critical Server Requirement:
Because Level 5 Mending pushes the application cost high, this datapack is designed to be paired with a separate Fabric/Forge mod that removes the vanilla "Too Expensive!" (level 39) anvil cap. This pack strictly handles the enchantment maths; it does not bypass the hardcoded anvil UI limits.
